Understanding BSPP and BSPT

BSPP and BSPT stand for British Steel Pipe Parallel and British Steel Pipe Taper respectively and the terms typically refer to the types of screw thread that is used to seal pipes together by interlocking the external and internal threads. Clearly there is a differentiation to be made in terms of the sizes since one has to fit inside the other. The BSPT diameter decreases with the length of the thread, but the BSPP stays the same.

Typically these types of pipe can be combined into different types of joints. The first is jointing threads where a solid connection is made through the force of pressure between the two threads. The male always uses a taper male thread, but the female can either be parallel or tapered. The longscrew threads are parallel pipe threads that use the compression of a material in between the two threads to achieve pressure sealed tightness.

Duplex Versus Super Duplex

Super duplex stainless steel differs from duplex in that it is a steel with pitting corrosion resistance. They are a highly alloyed steel often with 25% chromium or more. They have the same high strength and resistance to stress corrosion, fatigue and erosion as duplex as well as offering a great resistance to chloride elements that can cause stress corrosion cracking. Couple this with a high thermal conductivity rate as well as a low coefficient of thermal expansion and super duplex quickly becomes the stainless steel of choice for many.

Just like duplex, it offers low thermal expansion and high energy and heat conductivity, beating other austenitic steels. What really sells their versatility however, is the malleability and weldability of the steel meaning that it can easily be worked to your needs across multiple applications.

This steel is available as a seamless pipe as well as flanges, butt weld fittings, fasteners and pressure fittings. It means that steels like this typically have a wide variety of applications, but also there is a lot of cross over with duplex steels. For instance they are both used in tubing and piping (as a seamless pipe) for gas, oil and desalination plants. Super duplex steel can also be used as mechanical and structural components as well as in FGD systems in the power industry.

Just like duplex, these pipes can handle chlorides. They can be deployed in rotors, shafts, fans, press rolls, cargo tanks, vessels, chemical tankers – again, the chemical resistance coming into play.

Choosing Your Flange

Pipe flanges are an essential part of pipe fittings that perform a vital structural job, so investing in only the best flanges on which you can depend can really become imperative. Flanges are used to attach two pipes together or facilitate a change in direction and despite what you might assume with flanges, they are vital if you want to improve the structural integrity of your pipe system.

The most common type of pipe flanges are anchor flanges which are used to create a solid base for the pipe which is then supported with a holder. All of this is usually achieved through welding and concrete supports.

There are other types of flanges that perform different tasks. The split flange for instance, can be fitted to a pre-existing pipe that has perhaps become weakened over time, require a new attachment or require other amendments to be made to the structure of the pipe fittings. The third most common type of flange is an expander flange. These come into play at connection points where there is a desire to make the pipe larger. They are typically welded to the pipe but they can be more space efficient by taking up less space than a reducer welding neck flange.
